"Hurray for Australia"
CANBERRA AUSTRALIA:
Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.
A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.
Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state and its laws were made by parliament.
"If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a
theocratic state, then Australia is not for you," he said on national television. "I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia, one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country, which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option," Costello said.
Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said those with
dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other country.
Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off".
"Basically, people who don't want to be Australians, and they don't want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then they can basically clear off," he said.
Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques.
AMERICANS... ARE YOU LISTENING?
Of course I was skeptical about this being true, so I turned to good friends Nick & Nora with questions relating to it's authenticity as far as the quotes go.
The result:
Nope - the quotes are genuine - : Costello, Costello again, and Nelson

Accept our law or leave: Costello
TREASURER Peter Costello said radical Muslims would not be allowed to turn Australia into an Islamic state.
Mr Costello said Muslims who wanted to live in a country governed by sharia law, which imposes strict limitations on freedoms, would be better off living elsewhere.
"If you are somebody who wants to live in an Islamic state governed by sharia law you are not going to be happy in Australia, because Australia is not an Islamic state, will never be an Islamic state and will never be governed by sharia law," Mr Costello said.
"We are a secular state under our constitution, our law is made by parliament elected in democratic elections.
"We do not derive our laws from religious instruction."
Mr Costello said anyone who was alienated by Australia's form of government, judicial system and civil rights and wanted something else "might be better advised to find the 'something else' somewhere else".
"There are Islamic states around the world that practise sharia law and if that's your object you may well be much more at home in such a country than trying to turn Australia into one of those countries, because it's not going to happen," he said.

No Sharia in Australia says Costello
FEDERAL Treasurer Peter Costello has again urged Islamic extremists to leave Australia, saying there is no point in living in a country with a system of government they oppose.
"There are some things Australia stands for, has always stood for, always will stand for, which will never change," he told A Current Affair.
"We will never be an Islamic state. We will never observe Sharia law ... We will always be a democracy.
"To people who say `well, we've come to this country and we would like to turn it into something it isn't, I say you must understand that will never occur".
Mr Costello said rather than try to change Australia, they should leave it.
"People who are dual citizens, if they are not happy with Australia, it might be better for them to live in the country where they are also a citizen," he said.
"Rather than saying `I'd like to change everything about Australia, everything it stands for," maybe the problem doesn't lie with the country, maybe it lies with the individual."
Mr Costello said threats of terrorism may persist into the future.
"When you see people that are being picked up in raids in our major capital cities, (who) are being charged with terrorist offences, you realise that these are dangerous times," he said.
"You realise that we as a community have to be on our guard."
"It's something we will have to live with, we may have to live with for awhile, but it's much better to take preventative action then have to deal with the consequences afterwards."

Teach Australian values or 'clear off', says Nelson
PM - Wednesday, 24 August , 2005 18:18:00
Reporter: Samantha Hawley
MARK COLVIN: Teach Australian values or "clear off". That's the message to Islamic schools in Australia from the Federal Education Minister, Brendan Nelson.
Dr Nelson gives the World War One story of Simpson and his donkey as an example of the values he means. It's the story of the unarmed soldier with a donkey who rescued wounded men on Gallipoli.
Dr Nelson says if we lose sight of what Simpson and his donkey represented, Australia as a nation will lose its direction.
Islamic leaders agreed after their meeting with the Prime Minister in Canberra yesterday, that Islamic schools should be required to instil Australian values.
And today, John Howard warned that the Government was prepared to "get inside" mosques and schools to ensure they're not supporting terrorism.
Samantha Hawley reports.
SAMANTHA HAWLEY: The Federal Education Minister Brendan Nelson is passionate about the story of Simpson and his donkey and he thinks all Australian schools should be too.
BRENDAN NELSON: Simpson, which is part myth and part truth, is about an unarmed man with a donkey who, over some 40 days, rescued a number of injured and wounded men. He was unarmed and he represents everything that's at the heart of what it means to be an Australian. Simpson was a man who was prepared to put the interests and welfare of other human beings ahead of his own.
SAMANTHA HAWLEY: At yesterday's meeting of Islamic leaders in Canberra it was agreed that schools should instil Australian values.
Today Brendan Nelson sent a warning to the nation's 30 Islamic schools - teach Australian values or leave.
BRENDAN NELSON: We don't care where people come from, we don't mind what religion they've got but what we want them to do is to commit to the Australian Constitution, Australian rule of law and basically, if people don't want to be Australians and they don't want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then they can basically clear off.
SAMANTHA HAWLEY: It's something the Federal Opposition's Education Spokeswoman, Jenny Macklin, supports.
JENNY MACKLIN: In this environment it's extremely important that we have all students in all schools studying and understanding the importance of tolerance, understanding the importance of our civic, our civic and legal responsibilities as Australian citizens.
SAMANTHA HAWLEY: For Brendan Nelson there are nine key Australian values and he's so serious about them he recently allocated $30 million funding to ensure they're being taught in Australian schools.
They include care and compassion, a fair go, freedom, honesty, trustworthiness, respect and tolerance, and he says Islamic students must be aware of them.
And on Southern Cross Radio this morning, the Prime Minister warned that the Government was prepared to more closely scrutinize the teachings in the nation's Islamic schools.
RADIO HOST: Are you prepared to get inside the mosques and the prayer halls and the schools, the Islamic schools to make sure that nothing untoward is going on there?
JOHN HOWARD: Yes, to the extent necessary, yes. I mean I have no desire and nor is it the Government's intention to interfere in any way with the freedom or practice of religion but we have a right to know whether there is within any section of the Islamic community a preaching of the virtues of terrorism.
SAMANTHA HAWLEY: But staff at Islamic schools who've spoken out today say students are already being taught about Australian history and the Australian way of life.
The Principal of the Al-Hidayah Islamic School in Perth, Abdullah Khan, says it's part of the curriculum for the 200 students there.
ABDULLAH KHAN: And we have got one period for every class every week to teach them values and it's integrated into curriculum as well at the same time, for example, honesty, truthfulness, being a good citizen.
SAMANTHA HAWLEY: Although, he says, the story of Simpson and his donkey is not specifically taught. That may disappoint Dr Nelson.
BRENDAN NELSON: Because if we lose sight of what Simpson and his donkey represents, then we will lose our direction as a country.
SAMANTHA HAWLEY: But not every one thinks Simpson and his donkey are the key.
Doctor Brigid Rooney is from the Department of Australian Studies at Sydney University.
BRIGID ROONEY: Frankly I think that would possibly tend to turn students off because it might come across as indoctrination. Some students would see it as powerful but then for others it might seem as a message being pushed at them in a way that they might want to reject.
So, I don't think that that kind of didactic imparting of values ever really works. I think that values come about through a much more interactive process where people follow the example of others that they admire.
MARK COLVIN: Brigid Rooney, from the Department of Australian Studies at Sydney University, with Samantha Hawley.
It's funny, you know... I never really know who I would vote for in an election until just before when I get to read their policies and stances on issues, but if these 2 continue to show a bit of courage like this and retain their balls in the face of bleeding heart cocksuckers who want to allow these people into MY country, I might even say that I would vote for them.
