I'd always heard that cycle-couriers were absolutely nuts in NY. When I first saw them in a report on TV years ago, I always thought that being a bicycle courier in NY would be the ultimate job - plenty of buzz and adrenaline and I'd be able to ride my bikes as well :)
Of course, time and a sense of mortality have entered the equation as well....
Simple answer is that the more you ride your bike in areas like this - the better you get at handling it and judging situations. To a degree, I'd also suggest that NY drivers would be significantly better than those here in Brisbane! Here, they'll run you down where there it appears to be that some people actually use their mirrors - even if it is to avoid turning someone with a deathwish into road pizza.
